Romeo and Juliet has a vast amount of rhetorical devices,
but today I’m going to focus in on the one rhetorical device Shakespeare used
that really caught my attention. Well, that would be the use of rhyme. Rhyme is
when the endings of words sound the same to create flow and memorability. Throughout
the whole play, Shakespeare used the rhyming technique, it made the story much
more interesting to me, and it made me want to recite most of the scenes aloud.
A great example of the rhyming in Romeo and Juliet would be in act 3 scene 1,
where Romeo is explaining the sad fate that he thinks awaits him.
“From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life,
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife...”
A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life,
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife...”
I think that Shakespeare used rhyming just to spice up
the play a bit. I mean, anyone can write a love story, but who can really make
the whole thing rhyme while making perfect sense at the same time? Obviously he
did a great job at it seeing as how Romeo and Juliet is a world renowned
play...and I love it!
Great job Fola!
